Media Asset Management Definition

In the broadcasting industry, the term Media Asset Management (MAM) refers to the use of computer systems to manage, store and distribute multimedia assets for television or radio broadcasts. In this context, a MAM is an indispensable tool for improving the productivity, quality and originality of television and radio program production.

MAMs have the following functions in the broadcasting industry:

  • A secure and scalable storage system for storing huge amounts of multimedia assets, such as text, images, audio and video recordings.
  • Metadata management: the ability to relate detailed information to each multimedia file, such as title, description, production date, author, etc.
  • Workflow: The ability to automate and control work processes, from content production to distribution, to ensure that content is available for broadcast on time.
  • Integration with the Newsroom system: MAM offers a central repository for storing, managing, and distributing all media assets, including photos, video, and audio. The Newsroom provides easy access to this content for news production and delivery.
  • Collaboration: the ability to collaborate with other users on shared media resources, including choices for review and approval.
  • Data analysis and statistics: the ability to collect and evaluate data on content utilization, which provides crucial information for future production strategy decisions.

In conclusion, a MAM is an indispensable tool for the production, management and broadcasting of high-quality television and radio material in the broadcasting industry. It helps to increase the efficiency, quality and inventiveness of content production, ensuring that content is available and ready for broadcast on time.

One of the main features is the ease of access to the user interface from the initial login; it adopts a GUI logically similar to that of the APPs and socials we are used to working with every day, such as: groups and TAGS. Borneo MAM can also operate with multiple teams that are completely isolated one to the others.

It can connect to any existing infrastructure and supports a large variety of modern formats including UHD RAW camera formats.

Computes checksums (sha256) for all media, with automatic de-duplication.

It supports mixed archives, such as: online, near online, offline, deep archive (ALTO, tape library) and Cloud.

Allow definition of multiple metadata ‘schema’ for different content types such as: news, movies, serials, documentaries, presentations, etc.

Able to use “groups” to partition the assets such as: public, reserved, for internal use, etc. Supports TAGs for simple asset classifications, such as: flat taxonomy, controlled vocabulary

Extended features such as transcoding, exporting, editing, file ingest, based band ingest (SDI/IP SMPTE 2110), Newsroom

Enhanced features include, for example, Statistics and the Dashboard.

Statistics offer an at-a-glance graphical view of several significant pieces of information that provide an overview of current Media Asset Management usage. Grouped by date, for example, it is possible to analyze: assets per scheme, GB ingested per scheme, total number of media ingested, total GB ingested, total proxy jobs, results of proxy jobs, etc.

The Dashboard provides an immediate view of all current activities, such as exporting, rendering, creating proxies, deleting files, etc..

A particularly important feature is the possibility, for example, to stop any process, change the priority or restart an aborted process.
